In our new opera, The Dove and the Nightingale, librettist Mitchell Morris and I composed this song as a pop song that our heroine, Angela Peralta, sings on a ship in the middle of the night to a group of sailors who demand that she sing it. The song that she actually sang was the famous Spanish folk song, La Paloma. Instead of quoting it we decided to write our own.
