Michael K. Slayton is an American composer who has written works in a cross-section of musical genres, with specific emphasis on chamber music. His continuing dedication to the value of artistic exchange has afforded him opportunity to partner with distinguished performers all over the world. His music, published by ACA, Inc. (BMI), is regularly programmed in the U.S. and abroad, including Chemnitz, Seitz, Leipzig, Droyssig, and Weimar, Germany; Graz, Austria; Paris,Tours, and Marquette-lez-Lille, France; Kristiansund, Norway; Aviero, Portugal; Brussles, Belgium; Johannesburg and Potchefstroom, South Africa; London, UK; and New York, NY.
Recent works include Kleemation (2016), commissioned by oboist Jared Hauser; Dreamers’ Meadows (2015), commissioned by The Atlantic Ensemble; Mirórs (2013); Meditation and Reflections, for viola (2012), commissioned by violist Christian Liberty Marshall; Fifth Prelude for Orchestra (2011), commissioned by Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra (Marcello Bussiki, director); Sursum (2010), commissioned by the Kreutzer Quartet, London; and A Hideous Veil (2010), commissioned by Blair Percussion Vortex (Michael Holland, director).
Since moving to Nashville in 1999, Slayton has received numerous commissions for choral, solo, orchestral and chamber works, including two pieces for the Nashville Ballet. During his M.M. and D.M.A. studies at the Moore’s School of Music (Houston TX), Slayton was under the tutelage of composers Michael Horvit and David Ashley White, and distinguished musicologist and author Howard Pollack. Currently, Slayton serves as Associate Professor and Chair of Composition & Theory at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music.
Slayton is author/editor-in-chief of Women of Influence in Contemporary Music (Scarecrow Press, 2011), a book detailing the lives and music of several of America’s notable women in composition, including Elizabeth R. Austin,Susan Botti, Gabriela Lena Frank, Jennifer Higdon, Libby Larsen, Tania León, Cindy McTee, Marga Richter, and Judith Shatin.
A member of the American Composer’s Alliance, Society of Composers, Inc., the College Music Society, Connecticut Composers, Inc., and Broadcast Music, Inc., Michael Slayton continues to be an active participant in the national and international music community.

Yarn/Wire is admired for the energy and precision they bring to performances of today's most adventurous music. Amy Jarman has been hailed by the Los Angeles Times for her “radiant tone and moving phrasing”. She is an active performer appearing in opera, concert and oratorio performances in universities and at music festivals in the States and abroad. In addition to her singing, she is a noted pedagogue teaching master classes and adjudicating voice competitions specifically working with high school and college-aged singers.
Melissa Rose has performed internationally and throughout the United States as a collaborative pianist. She also appears regularly with ALIAS Chamber Ensemble, the Nashville Ballet, and Summerfest Concerts in Kansas City. Rose is Associate Professor of Piano and Associate Dean at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music.
Jerome A. Reed is the Patricia and Rodes Hart Professor of Piano at Lipscomb University. He has performed extensively in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America and has given over fifty performances of Charles Ives’s Concord Sonata. Reed is the director of the music division of the Tennessee Governor's School for the Arts and has received the Distinguished Service Award and Teacher of the Year Award from the Tennessee Music Teachers Association.
The Kreutzer Quartet are the dedicatees of hundreds of new works for string quartet. In the past year, they have premiered pieces by Edward Cowie, Sadie Harrison, Michael Finnissy, Rolf Martinsson, David Gorton, John McCabe, David Matthews and Jeremy Dale Roberts. They have recorded critically acclaimed cycles of works by Reicha, Gerhard, Finnissy, Tippett, Matthews and Gloria Coates. They are resident artists at Wilton’s Music Hall and Ensemble in Residence at Goldsmiths College.
Evan Mack has performed with the Kentucky Symphony, the Cincinnati Symphony Chamber Players, the Dayton Philharmonic, and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra; including a performance in Carnegie Hall. He studied with Michael Chertock and holds the Doctorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. Mack is also the composer of three operas: Angel of the Amazon, The Secret of Luca, and Roscoe.
Joshua McGuire is widely in demand as a performer of new music. He has presented recitals in the United States and abroad, including the Seminari e Festival di Primavera in Imperia, Italy and the Museo del Chopo in Mexico City. He studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, where he pursued Master’s work in both guitar and orchestral conducting. He is also an active librettist, having produced the text for several full-length operas.
Jennifer McGuire is a vocal coach and teacher of collaborative piano at Vanderbilt University. She has had professional engagements with Nashville Opera, Cincinnati Opera and Dayton Opera, as well as the Nashville Symphony Chorus; and she was on the staff of the AIMS festival in Graz, Austria, from 2008-2010. Ms. McGuire is the founder of Blair’s mentoring program for coaches, which runs biannually under the tutelage of extraordinary pianist Roger Vignoles.
The Atlantic Ensemble has performed throughout the United States and Europe, currently a fixture on the St-.Merri concert series in Paris, France. They are dedicated to commissioning and performing new works by American composers, and are committed to teaching the next generation of young musicians. The ensemble recently completed a tour of New England and a return trip to Paris in 2016.
